What ACTIBLOK IPR is used for?
It is used to treat,
- high blood pressure
- poor blood supply to the coronary arteries (coronary heart disease, angina pectoris)
- rapid forms of heart rhythm disorders (tachycardic arrhythmias), especially if these originate in the atria (supraventricular tachycardia)
- functional cardiovascular disturbances
- mild to moderate stable chronic heart muscle weakness (heart failure) (with impaired function of the left ventricle) in addition to the standard therapy
It is used to prevent,
- migraine
- another heart attack after a previous heart attack (maintenance therapy)
Tell your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:
- are allergic to metoprolol Succinate, other beta-blockers or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- have heart problems, severe blood circulation problems (severe peripheral arterial disease)
- have a slow heart rate (less than 50 beats/min)
- have low blood pressure
- suffer from increased acidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis)
- have severe asthma have untreated phaeochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to a rare tumor in one of your adrenal glands)
- tight chest pain usually occurring during the night
- have diabetes mellitus
- have an overactive thyroid
- have or have suffered from psoriasis
- reduced kidney or liver function
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
Tell your doctor if you are taking or have taken,
- medicines to treat heart rhythm disorders, as e.g. verapamil- and diltiazem-type calcium antagonists or class I antiarrhythmics (e.g. disopyramide)
- other beta-receptor blockers (e.g. eye drops containing the active substance timolol)
- blood-pressure lowering medicines like hydralazine
- certain medicines to treat depression like paroxetine, fluoxetine and sertraline
- medicines to treat sleeplessness like diphenhydramine
- some substances to treat joint disorders like hydroxychloroquine and celecoxib
- some medicines to treat fungal infections (terbinafine)
- neuroleptics (e.g. chlorpromazine, triflupromazine, chlorprothixene)
- some medicines to treat heart rhythm disorders like amiodarone, quinidine and possibly propafenone
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Take once daily with a glass of water in the morning
- Swallow the whole medicine
- Do not chew or crush before swallowing
- The duration of treatment is determined by your doctor
If you take more ACTIBLOK IPR
- If you have accidentally taken more than the prescribed dose, contact your nearest casualty department or tell your doctor at once
If you forget to take ACTIBLOK IPR
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, then go on as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten medicine
If you stop taking ACTIBLOK IPR
- Do not suddenly stop taking ACTIBLOK IPR, as this may cause worsening of heart failure and increase the risk of heart attack. Only change the dose or stop the treatment in consultation with your doctor
Like all medicines, ACTIBLOK IPR can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

- heart pain
- shortness of breath
- yellowing of the skin and/or the eyes (this can be a sign of an inflammation of the liver)
- marked fall in blood pressure, also when rising from a lying position, very rarely with unconsciousness
- tiredness
- slowed pulse (bradycardia), feeling of imbalance (very rarely with unconsciousness), sensation of irregular or forceful beating of the heart (palpitations)
- dizziness, headache
- nausea, bellyache, diarrhoea, constipation
- cold hands and feet
- transient worsening of the symptoms of heart failure, a certain form of heart rhythm disorder (first degree AV block), pain around the heart
- pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- spasms of the bronchi
- vomiting
- skin alterations, rashes similar to psoriasis, increased sweating
- muscle cramps
- weight gain
- water retention in the tissues (oedema)
- depression, impaired concentration, drowsiness and sleeplessness, nightmares
- functional heart disorders such as gallop rhythm (when the heart skips a beat) or rapid beating of the heart, certain heart rhythm disorders (conduction disorders)
- visual disturbances, dry or irritated eyes, conjunctivitis
- cold
- dry mouth
- hair loss
- deterioration of diabetes that was present without any typical symptoms (latent diabetes mellitus)
- abnormal liver function test values
- impotence and other sexual disturbances, hardening of the soft tissue of the cavernous body of the penis (plastic induration of the penis)
- nervousness, anxiety
- decrease in blood platelets (thrombocytopenia), decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia)
- ear noise (tinnitus), hearing disorders
- taste disturbances
- photosensitivity, worsening of psoriasis, new occurrence of psoriasis, skin alterations resembling psoriasis, skin alterations resembling psoriasis
- pain in the joints, muscle weakness
- inflammation of the liver
- forgetfulness or impaired memory, confusion, hallucinations, personality changes (e.g. mood changes)
