Talk to your doctor before taking BICIPHAGE SR If you,
- are allergic to metformin hydrochloride
- have type 1 diabetes
- have severely reduced kidney function/liver problems/heart problems/breathing problems
- have uncontrolled diabetes, with, for example, severe hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis
- have ketoacidosis (a condition in which substances called ketone bodies accumulate in the blood and which can lead to diabetic pre-coma)
- have dehydration as it may lead to kidney problems, which can put you at risk for lactic acidosis
- have a severe infection, such as an infection affecting your lung or bronchial system or your kidney
- drink a lot of alcohol
Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. It is especially important to mention the following:
- topiramate, zonisamide, acetazolamide or dichlorphenamide (carbonic anhydrase inhibitors)
- ranolazine, vandetanib, dolutegravir, and cimetidine
- other medicines used to treat diabetes such as insulin
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Swallow BICIPHAGE SR whole and never crush, cut or chew
- The recommended starting dose of BICIPHAGE SR is 500 mg orally once daily with the evening meal
- Increase the dose in increments of 500 mg weekly on the basis of glycemic control and tolerability, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal
If you take more BICIPHAGE SR
- If you have taken more BICIPHAGE SR than you should have, you may experience lactic acidosis. Talk to your doctor straight away
If you forget to take BICIPHAGE SR
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Take the next dose at the usual time
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms, which could be signs of lactic acidosis
- dizzy or lightheaded
- cold in your hands or feet
- very weak or tired
- slow or irregular heartbeat
- trouble in breathing
- stomach pains, nausea or vomiting
