What TRIAZEM is used for?
TRIAZEM is used to treat,
- angina (chest pain caused by a reduction of oxygen to the heart muscle)
- high blood pressure (hypertension)
Tell your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:
- are allergic (hypersensitive) to diltiazem or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- have heart problems including a slow heartbeat, first degree heart block, a change in the electrical activity of the heart (prolonged PR interval)
- have heart failure (which can cause shortness of breath or ankle swelling)
- have porphyria (a rare disease of the blood pigments)
- have diabetes mellitus
- have depression
- have liver or kidney problems
- are undergoing surgery
- are an alcoholic
Please tell your doctor or if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
- dantrolene infusion (a muscle relaxant)
- antiarrhythmic drugs such as amiodarone (used to treat an irregular heart beat)
- antihypertensives (used to lower blood pressure)
- lithium (used for mental health problems)
- nitrates such as glyceryl trinitrate or isosorbide mononitrate (used to treat angina)
- midazolam or triazolam (used for sedation and anaesthesia)
- rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis)
- imipramine and other tricyclic antidepressants (used for depression)
- phenobarbital, phenytoin or carbamazepine (to treat epilepsy)
- ciclosporin (used to suppress immune system e.g. after organ transplantation)
- theophylline (used in breathing problems such as asthma)
- digitalis glycosides e.g. digoxin (used for some heart conditions)
- beta blockers such as propranolol (used for some heart problems)
- H2 antagonists e.g. cimetidine (used to treat conditions caused by excess acid such as stomach ulcers)
- diuretics
- alpha blockers such as prazosin
- statins, e.g. simvastatin (used to treat high cholesterol)
- corticosteroids (used to treat inflammation)
- Always take TRIAZEM exactly as your doctor has told you
- Do not exceed the dose recommended by your doctor
- Swallow your TRIAZEM whole with a glass of water
- Do not chew or crush the medicine
If you take more TRIAZEM
- Call your doctor or hospital straight away, if you have taken more TRIAZEM
If you forget to take TRIAZEM
- Take your next dose at your normal time. If you are more than 4 hours late, please call your doctor for advice. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking TRIAZEM
- You should not stop taking TRIAZEM unless your doctor tells you to. If you want to stop taking TRIAZEM, discuss this with your doctor first
Like all medicines, TRIAZEM can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

- swelling of the face or throat, skin rash or itching especially those covering your whole body, severe flaking, blistering or peeling of the skin, with or without a fever
- feeling sick, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation
- dizziness, headache
- flushing or redness of the skin
- a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat
- generally feeling unwell
- tiredness
